The Buteyko Guided Relaxation Exercise

Learn how to Relax

A key and often overlooked skill in Buteyko Breathing is the capacity to find relaxation in the body. By learning to relax our muscles, we can slow and soften our breathing without actually needing to pay attention to the breath. There are 3 key benefits to this exercise:

  1. It is particularly helpful for those who initially find it difficult or stressful to focus on their breathing as there is no direct focus on the breath.

  2. For those with a low Control Pause (CP), or serious health conditions, this exercise offers a low intensity option.

  3. As a supportive practice for all the other Buteyko exercises. By learning to relax the body, we can bring this relaxation into other practices such as Breathe Light and the breath holding practices.

Although it is possible to self-guide this practice, it is recommended to begin with one of the guided audio recordings below. Simply set yourself up in a comfortable seated or lying posture, and press play.
